In 2014, disabled veterans, Donald and Tanya Barnett founded Forever Free Books, a literacy nonprofit to deliver free books and story time to low-income children in their communities.
A few years ago, Tanya assumed all children had books in their homes. While she was working as a substitute teacher at an elementary school, her eyes were opened to the fact that her assumption was wrong. Many of her students did not own books and could barely read.
Don and Tanya founded Forever Free Books as their mission to ensure every child they come in contact with has the opportunity to own a book of their choice to begin a home library. Don is extremely passionate about literacy because he struggled with reading as a child. He does not want other children to feel the way he did.
Tanya is also the Award-Winning Indie Author of Being a Wife Just Got Real. Don is the author of Manhood on the Line.
Combined, Don and Tanya have been featured on and in Black Love DOC on OWNTV, Essence Magazine, Huffington Post, The Today Show, The Tom Joyner Morning Show, TEDx, Sirius XM, Johns Hopkins University, NAACP, Congressional Black Caucus, Federally Employed Women, FBI, EPA, etc.
Tanya is a 2018 Charles County NAACP Hall of Famer for the work of their nonprofit, Forever Free Books.
Don and Tanya have been married 20 years. They have 3 children and a grandson.
